ARTIST STATEMENT
My architectural and botanical printed paper collages often center around a building with different architectural elements removed and floral and other natural bits overlapping and weaving in and out of the building. Many collages sit in the center of white papers, with a clear border around the image. More recent works have begun to spill over the edge of the sheet of paper, creating an irregularly shaped 3D piece.
My process begins with photographing homes and botanical references. These images become the materials for my collages. Each building is digitally altered and printed in a monochromatic color palette so that the natural elements used in their true colors contrast against their facades. After printing, I intricately cut each image to combine them with several others to create a woven paper collage. I build it up in layers. I cut out windows, doors, and bricks, replacing them with natural pieces and placing the architectural bits elsewhere. Flowers sprout out of cracks, leaves grow out of windows, and often petals weave behind buildings. These botanical bits represent life and the roots we plant in physical spaces.
Through my artwork, I look at the relationships between people and places. I look at how, why, and where we plant roots. I am interested in how one relates to the space around them - where they call home - and how they remember the places they have left behind. Fueled by my fascination with genealogy and exploring my Italian heritage, the homes my relatives and I have moved on from have inspired me to search for a sense of place and belonging through my artwork. Through my collages, I am planting roots on ancestral grounds.
