People send me postcards. They write about their travels, giving me glimpses into their experiences. They write about places I’ve never been. They write memories I’ll never have. They choose specific things to share with me. And, in sending me these postcards they send me memories they think I will want.
I save them. I collect them. I display them. I enjoy them. But in sending me these cards, I then must receive them. I absorb them––and their memories become mine. I have reinterpreted these postcards. They are now my memories, but the spirit of the sender still lingers, embedded in the imagery.
I cut up the postcards and combine the broken cards into a collage. I use this collage as the basis for my paintings and prints and transfer the collage to my canvas where I further alter the image as I paint, until I feel I have successfully made these memories my own.
